City centre night out – alone?

(I'm sure it depends City to City – I'm in Liverpool myself.)

How common is it to go on a night out by yourself? Has anyone here had experience of it? Bars, clubs, whatever. Is it practical to just go to a bar alone one night, grab a drink, and see what happens? I'd like to meet new people really. Is this a done thing?
